Who is Sammy Stumph?
Sammy Stumph is a country, folk, and christian singer/songwriter. He was born in 1972 in the town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Bob (a minister) and Gail (an elementary school teacher). As a young child, Sammy naturally gravitated to music. Once while his father was in the middle of a sermon, Sammy began to sing in the restroom. His father paused the sermon as he and the congregation listened to his young son belt out a song at the top of his lungs.
As a minister's son, Sammy found himself moving all over the mid and northwest. On one of the many moves, his family resided for a time in Astoria, Oregon. Life in Astoria was idealic. The family lived on a small farm where the boys learned to raise cattle, tend a garden, and bale hay. Sammy took on a job as a newspaper boy to earn extra money. When he finished the eighth grade, Sammy attended a boarding academy called Milo for two years. Inevitably, his family would move again and this time settle in Walla Walla, Washington.
Sammy completed high school at Walla Walla Valley Academy. While attending this school, his interest in music began to really develop. At that point, he had taken four years of voice lessons and was a senior class officer in charge of music. Before graduating, Sammy was awarded the National School Choral Award. He was ready to attend Walla Walla College. However, God has a way of taking life in a different direction when you think your plans are set in stone.
In the summer of 1991, Sammy was involved in a serious car accident which aggravated his Ankylosing Spondylitis. This eventually caused him to have a total hip replacement in October of the same year. Needless to say, Sammy did not attend Walla Walla College. A year later, his family moved to Brownwood, TX, where he taught himself to play the guitar. Sammy attended Southwestern Adventist University for a couple years as a music major but did not complete his degree. He dropped out of college and worked for a while as a manager at a local fast food chain. Yet the open road beckoned as it always will for someone accustomed to moving often.
Sammy left his job as a manager and became a truck driver. He traveled the lower 48 states and Canada for ten years, soothing his ever inquisitive and eclectic soul with new experiences and unknown destinations. During this time, he wrote lyrics and poetry. Many times, he traveled with his guitar. The solitude and peace of the truck granted opportunities for creativity.
In 2001, Sammy married his wife Sara. They have two sons, Nicky and Beau. A few years after the birth of his first son, Sammy stopped driving trucks and began to devote all his time to music. In 2012, he recorded a song called Baby Beau and put it on MySpace. The song hit #1 on their charts. In December 2013, Sammy released another single called Christmas Time Again. Currently, he is working on a debut album that has been dubbed "Project xSS".
